JOHN BULLOCH SOUTER (1890-1971)
Painter and printmaker born in Aberdeen. Attended Gray's School of Art. While on a travelling scholarship to Europe he was inspired by artists such as Vermeer. In the period after the war, he made a name as a portrait painter, with famous celebrities and academics among his clients. He also exhibited at the Redfern Gallery, Fine Art Society, Royal Scottish Academy and elsewhere. He returned to Aberdeen to settle in 1952. Souter's work is represented in many public collections, including the Victoria & Albeit Museum, Royal Academy of Arts and the National War Museum.
